The Graduate

James graduated today.
He's been done for a semester,
but today he was officially hooded as a Master of Fine Arts
(it's called a hooding ceremony,
which I think sounds incredibly sinister).

The process begins:

Then he realized there were these wings sleeves.

There was confusion,

The consulting of gown instructions,

but, ultimately, James was victorious over the gown.

***the aftermath:
Andy and Shiloh came to the ceremony,
but had to leave a bit early
(because pete wouldn't pipe down),
so I had James put the gown back on for pictures,

and then he refused to take it off.
He ate nachos in it, watched youtube clips in it,
leaned out onto the fire escape to check his bonsai tree in it.
He explained that he had spent $60 to rent it,
and he was going to get his $60 worth.

  1. Congratulations on the terminal degree, which I think sounds possibly even more sinister than the hooding ceremony.

Glenny was trying on his robes and hood tonight for commencement on Saturday. Because he's cautious like that.

  2. Congratulations to you both!!! (the supportive wife helps!)

    And $60 is highway ROBBERY.

  3. 60 dollars was cheap compared to the cost to buy that stuff. 118 for the robe, 132 just for that stupid hood and 40 for the flat hat.

    Stupid graduation racket.

Luckily, I loved the whole thing. Thanks for the post, Val.

  4. Congrats!! That is Awesome!

  5. Ana: If Glenny needs any tips, I saw a lot of gowned people yesterday. Does he get a tam-o-shanter, or just a regular mortarboard?

Lins: A few people walked across with their babies and children. I was thinking that James should have invited me up to walk across with him.

    Bryce: Thanks, dude.

  6. huzzah for poetry. can you "huzzah" for poetry? Maybe I should just say, "poetry....Huzzah!"
    Valerie....Huzzah! James.....Huzzah!
    Candy at Convocation....Huzzah!

  7. Shiloh: ditto to that last one. Although, i had a terrible stomachache for the rest of the day due to too many reeces peanut better cups and sour patch kids.
    Totally worth it.
