The Reluctant Debutante

I have to admit I've never seen this movie,
but it has Rex Harrison and Angela Lansbury,
so...guess just what went on my Netflix que.

I was never a debutant, reluctant or otherwise.
These balls still go on, I'm sure, but in a hard scrabble place like
Southern California, where I grew up, they were hard to come by.
We had our other cultural traditions, like prom,
and those terrifying Super Sweet 16 parties like you see on MTV
(who says Southern California is a cultural vacuum?).

It's not that I think I'm above things like Debutant Balls.
I mean, the idea is antiquated,
and the party itself seems anachronistic.
But looking at these pictures, I start to wish...

Wouldn't it be something to be listed in the paper like this.
Part society page, part mail-order bride catalog.

p.s. There's something about this last picture that makes me think Lindsey will really like it. Linds, tell me if I know you as well as I think I do.

  1. You know me well. It's true, I love big hair and backless dresses and vintage photos.

We went to a debutante display at Kensington Palace and it was fascinating. I think we can count this tradition as a royal one.

  2. I'm something of a debutante, I think. I do have a lot of backless t-shirts and my hair is pretty big right now.
