A German State of Mind

A few years ago I went to Germany for Thanksgiving.

(James went to Idaho---and he still hasn't come to grips with this disparity).

It was amazing. Surprisingly amazing. I was not prepared for how deeply I'd love Berlin.

What a past, but what a beautiful spirit it has.

My feet, on the Berlin Wall. These paving stones run the width of the city, marking where east and west Germany were divided.

We walked across this demarcation, at first, tentatively, reverently, but then, as we kept doing it, we stopped noticing, of course. And that, I think, is how to really hallow that ground.
